I went home that day and talked to my parents about my conversation with Johnny. The three of us sat at the dining room table, hands folded in front of us. All three of us knew it was time to do something about GH.

“I’m done playing on this team,” I said.

“What are you going to do now?” My mom asked.

I stayed quiet for a second, trying to gain the confidence to tell them about my idea.

“I can’t say I’m not disappointed with the way things have turned out. It’s embarrassing to think I’ve been trying to earn the approval of and impress a bunch of people who want to see me fail.” I said.

Deep down, I knew my dad saw this as an opportunity to have me go back to basketball (the first sport I ever played). I could see the look of excitement he was trying hard to contain for my sake.

“Well, the good thing about you is you’re a natural athlete. You can play any sport you want and be good at it, like… basketball.” He said, with a smile.

My mom nudged him on the shoulder, “it’s her decision, not yours.” She said.

“What? Look, you can switch sports and you’d make the team. If you ask me, you should have stuck with basketball all along. There’s no political bull shit with basketball.” He said.

My mom rolled her eyes, “yeah, I’m so sure that’s true.” she said.

“Dad, I’m sorry. I love soccer too much.” I said.

“Yeah, but you’re not playing soccer anymore. Isn’t that what you’re saying?” he asked.

I worried about how he and my mom would react to my idea. More than anything I didn’t want them to turn it down, at which point I may not have any other choice but to play basketball.

“Okay, now I need you guys to hear me out on this because I’ve put a lot of thought into it. We all know, I’ll never be able to quit soccer, that’s just not realistic. I love it too much, basketball is nothing more than a hobby to me, sorry dad. I am quitting the GH team, they’ve made it clear I’m not welcome, so I’m giving them what they’ve all wanted by walking away. Now you might be asking yourselves what’s in it for me? And that’s what I want to talk to you about. This is my idea.” I said as I tried not to laugh as I sometimes did when I was nervous. Clearing my throat, I looked at my mom and then over at my dad.

“The GH team doesn’t want to play with me, so I want to show them what it’s like to play against me… I want to transfer schools, so I can play against GH.”
